Jocelyn grew up in California, moving to Michigan for her last three years of high school. At sixteen she scored her first job working in a bead store. She instantly fell in love with the wee bead. She earned her degree in Theater Arts with a dance major from Oberlin College, moved to Seattle to study at the New School of Visual Concepts, completed an internship with a fabric designer, and took every art class she could for self enjoyment as she cared for her family. Most recently she has been immersed in the art and craft of precious metal clay. She is deeply in love again.
Jocelyn’s beadwork and fine silver pieces have been shown in galleries from Arizona to Holland, and featured in publications such as the book Bead Art, PMC Guild Annuals I and II, and Sojourns Magazine.
Jocelyn Cooley works alone in her home studio in Sedona, Arizona. She creates one-of-a-kind wee artworks of fine silver, often combined with beadwork, semi precious stones, and/or fibers. She loves making jewelry, LifeBoxes (boxes containing symbolic references to one’s personal life) and StoryBowls (bowls with symbols and words holding meaning for the artist or client).
A favorite assignment is private commission work because she is able to create a piece suited particularly to the individual. Another current favorite is the reconstruction of antique family rosaries into sacred necklaces, as these reflect the beliefs of the individual wearing it now, while honoring the prayers of the past.
